Obituary for Esther Lucille Charleston

Esther Lucille Charleston, 91, departed this life peacefully on June 7, 2019, in Crescent City, CA. Her family is grateful for the compassionate care she received from the staff at Addie Meedom House for the past six years.

She was born to Benjamin and Esther Cracraft on May 7, 1928, in Amarillo, TX. There, Lucille (as she was called) grew up with her four siblings on the family farm, surviving the Dust Bowl Days and the Great Depression. After the outbreak of WW II, her family moved to Clark County WA, where she met her future husband and love of her life, Charles Charleston. They were married on August 5, 1950, and their marriage flourished for almost 63 years until his death in 2013. Lucille will be laid to rest beside him at Elim Cemetery in Brush Prairie, WA on Saturday, June 15.

Lucille received training in Iowa City, IA, to become a Registered Nurse, earning a top score on her state board exam. She and Charles moved to CC in 1955. She worked at Seaside Hospital, and for Dr. Hart and Dr. Kasper. She also worked as a home health nurse and at the community blood bank. She considered nursing her mission —helping many Del Norte residents into the world and providing care to keep them healthy. After about 25 years of nursing, Lucille changed careers to become a real estate broker, operating Charleston Realty in CC for about 15 years. She was especially satisfied by assisting so many first-time home buyers.

Some of the things that she will be remembered for by her family: canning massive numbers of jars of produce from her garden; picking wild blackberries and making jam and cobbler; baking legendary dozens of chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls that were unsurpassed; picnicking and swimming at the Smith River; houseboating on Lake Shasta; and family road trips. Lucille and Charles enjoyed many travels including to Hawaii, Europe, Branson, and especially to Mexico. Lucille was a capable seamstress, and she enjoyed playing her piano. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church since 1955.

Lucille is survived by her four children: John Charleston and wife Shelly of Monmouth, OR; Paul Charleston and wife Anne of Madera, CA; Dannie Charleston of CC; Martha Morgan and husband Mike of Gasquet. She is also survived by her sister Mildred Parkhurst of CC, brother Leonard Cracraft and his wife Nadine of Missouri, sister-in-law Marlene Cracraft of Florida, and brother-in-law Duane and sister-in-law Margaret Fredrickson of Washington. She was predeceased by her brother John Cracraft and her sister Grace Garrett.

Lucille’s ten surviving grandchildren are Marsina Haller of Portland, Christina Salvadori of Battle Ground, WA, Josh Charleston and Tiffany Charleston both of Monmouth, OR, Jeff Charleston of Covington, LA; Kate Rowe of Santa Barbara and Graham Charleston of McKinleyville; Deanna Charleston of CC; Ross Morgan and Laura Morgan both of Gasquet. Grandson Matthew Charleston and daughter-in-law Debbie Charleston both of CC predeceased her. She is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and 17 nieces/nephews. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
