Obituary for Robbyn "Rob" Val Roberts

Robbyn Val Roberts died peacefully at home on January 3, 2019. Rob was born on February 14,1955 to Eilene Draper and Stanley Roberts. He grew up in Price and Orem, Utah and joined the Army at age 17, serving in Germany. Immediately following his military service, Rob served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand.

Rob’s grandfather, Henry Draper, taught Rob how to weld at an early age, a trade which Rob utilized his entire life. He welded for oil rigs in Wyoming, and later he worked for the California State prison system teaching welding to inmates.

Rob had Multiple Sclerosis, but he wouldn’t let the disease keep him down. He was determined to do whatever he wanted despite his physical limitations.

Rob had three children with his first wife Lisa Allen: Brooke, Tyler and Lauren Roberts.

He married Catherine “Casey” Stephens in 1994 and gained a step-daughter, Natalie Stephens. Rob and Casey eventually made their home in Crescent City, California, where Rob supervised and managed construction projects for the prison. Casey, his love, died less than a year ago. He was dealing with grief but did his best to stay busy by spending time with friends and helping the church, youth, and elderly.

Rob loved Crescent City. He relished the people, the beautiful scenery, and the cool weather. He had an idyllic home tucked away in the woods which he enjoyed with his cats and chickens. He was devoted to serving in his local congregation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various callings, including ward mission leader, working in the young men’s presidency then serving as the young men’s president, the Sunday School president, and most recently was called as the stake finance auditor.

Rob was a kid at heart. He collected everything from worms and turtles as a boy, to records, coins and antiques as an adult. He also had a passion for gathering and polishing rocks from the local coast. He had a rock or two in his pocket at all times. His grandchildren, Avery and Austin Roberts, and step-grandchild, Miles Swanson, enjoyed Rob’s eclectic hobbies and inevitable adventures. One thing that will always be remembered about Rob was his passion for life and his love of helping others.

Rob is survived by many loving family members; his chosen father, James Marchand; two siblings, Claudia Bowles (Bruce Bowles) and Ralph Mitchell; four children, Brooke (Lee Swanson), Tyler (Aubrey Hogeman), Lauren, and Natalie; grandchildren, Avery, Austin, and Miles; and other neices and step-siblings.

While Rob will be dearly missed here, we believe that he is joyously reconnecting with departed loved ones.
