Obituary for Stephen Curtis Wakefield

Stephen Curtis Wakefield passed away April 26, 2019 at the age of 64.

Steve was born in Crescent City, CA on July 1, 1954 to Bob and Sybil Wakefield. Steve was a lifelong resident of Crescent City. He attended St Joseph’s Catholic School, Del Norte High and went on to Humboldt State University. After college, Steve and his brother Rob owned and operated Wakefield Brothers Garbage Company for a number of years.

On Aug 19, 1978, Steve married Debra Day. During their 40 years of marriage, they raised 3 sons Ryan, Marc and Matt. They now have 3 much loved daughter in laws, Katie, Samantha and Deja, and 4 (soon to be 5) grandchildren, Hollyn, Griffin, Brayden and Mason Stephen.

Steve was a man of many talents and managed to fulfill two dreams. He always wanted to be a firefighter, and he saw that dream come true with Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department, and later Crescent City Fire and Rescue. He also had a love of cooking, creating and entertaining. He saw that dream come true when he became a restauranteur.

Steve kicked off his restaurant career in 1982 when he opened Wakefield’s Restaurant, a coffee shop, dining room, and lounge. He expanded his dream in 1989 with the addition of Northwoods Restaurant.

Steve enjoyed his restaurant career for 35 years.

Steve followed his father’s footsteps in 1976 and joined the Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a Firefighter, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, and finally Fire Chief. He served with intensity, passion, dedication and a burning desire to do the best job possible. In 2015, Chief Wakefield was a major influence in integrating Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department and the Crescent Fire Protection District to create one department that serves the needs of this community. Steve served as Chief of that new department, Crescent City Fire and Rescue, from its inception until he suffered a debilitating stroke in January of 2018.

Above all else, Steve was an amazing family man who lead the way by example, love, compassion, and integrity. He deeply is loved by one and all.

Steve is survived by his wife Debra, his mother Sybil Wakefield, his sons Ryan Wakefield (Katie), Marc Wakefield (Samantha) and Matthew Wakefield (Deja), grandchildren Hollyn Wakefield, Griffin Wakefield, Brayden Wakefield, Mason Stephen Wakefield , sisters, Sarah Valley and Martha Wakefield, brothers Doug Wakefield (Tammy) and Rob Wakefield (Jennifer), his mother in law Caroll Day, brother in law Mike Day (Pennie) many nieces, nephews and other numerous relatives.

In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the Crescent City Fire and Rescue Firefighters’ Association, at 255 W. Washington Blvd, Crescent City, CA 95531.
