Obituary for Warren Eugene Barnts

Warren went to be with the Lord on Dec. 8, 2018, at 94 years of age. He was preceded in death, last March, by his beloved wife of 71 years, Ruby. Warren and Ruby had five children: Jim (Jan), Bill (Arlene), Dan, Tom (Patty), and Tami and Sean McClaflin; 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Warren was born near North Platte, Nebraska, and then their family moved to a dry land farm in Colorado. In 1936 a drought and the resulting Dust Bowl caused his family to move to Lebanon, Oregon.

At the age of 18, after graduating from high school, he volunteered to serve his country in the Army Air Corp in World War II. In a B-17, he flew 31 missions into France and Germany, with his first mission being on D-Day. For his bravery, Warren received a Bronze Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After the war, he returned to Lebanon where he met and married Ruby. After selling the gas station he owned in Lebanon, he moved his growing family to Crescent City in 1950, where he and his friend and partner, Paul Douglas, started Del Norte Tire Service. Del Norte Tire Service, now under the ownership of his son Dan, is one of the oldest businesses in Crescent City having served the community for 69 years.

During his years in Crescent City, he was a volunteer fireman, was on the board of the Crescent Fire District, worked with Habitat for Humanity and served and attended the Methodist Church for over 50 years. For his community service, in 2015 he received the Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1998, at the age of 74, he heard that the county was looking for a new building for its Health and Human Services. Through great effort and sacrifice, Warren secured a lease and constructed the existing building. Well into his 90s, he put on his boots every morning and drove to the Health and Human Services Building or the Del Norte Tire shop to do landscaping, painting or sweeping.

Warren will be missed. He was dedicated in everything he did. A description of Warren in a few words would be: disciplined, faithful, dependable, reliable, steadfast, persistent and humble.

In lieu of flowers, donations received will be given to Point of Honor Veterans Memorial in Crescent City.
