In Loving Memory Of

Hiram Stanton Jones

January 29th, 1932 - April 10th, 2026

Obituary

Hiram Stanton (Stan) Jones passed away on April 10th 2026, in Brookings Oregon. He was born at Fort Sill Oklahoma on January 29, 1932, to Hiram Forrest Jones and Gladys (Lee) Jones. He was the youngest of four and his father’s only child. He became known as “Stan the Man” to his three sisters Pat, Jackie and Betty. Due to his fathers’ career Stan lived in various locations within the US and Japan during the occupation.

Stan spent a lot of his childhood with his grandfather in Oklahoma, they formed a very strong bond: his grandfather named him “Hoot” because he didn’t give a hoot about anything. Stan wore his badge proudly; it became his life’s motto. He believed worry was a waste of time and lived life doing what he liked to do.

He joined the Marines and served in the Korean War. His mother didn’t want him to join the Air Force as she was terrified of flying and he didn’t wish to follow his father into the army. He had a very comfortable job mainly chauffeuring the officers around. After he was honorably discharged from the Marines, he decided to become a teacher despite him hating school as a youngster and never graduating. He taught in Colorado, Mendota and then moved to Crescent City.

By the time he reached Crescent City, he and his wife Elizabeth (Hanson) had six children in tow. Four boys and two girls. Stan taught School in Del Norte County until he retired and then worked as a substitute teacher. His subjects were Art and Science. After a Summer course at University of Maryland, he added Bottle rockets to his repertoire.

Upon retirement, he loved telling tall stories to anyone he met and sleeping. He really loved his bed. He loved to hunt, mostly deer with his longtime colleague Harold Martin but never brought anything home. He enjoyed spending time at the VFW with his two fellow Marines, Stan Webb and Jim McGill and other veterans.

Stan is preceded in death by his first wife Elizabeth (Liz), his sons Mark and Steve as well as his three sisters. He is survived by his daughters Kim, Marion (Keith) sons Marshal (Bernice) and Craig (Janice) daughters -in- law Kathy, Vikki, Judy, his wife, 11 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.
