Howard Burton Carpenter, age 89 of South Range, passed away September 21, 2023, at Digby General Hospital. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Howard and Martha (Wolter) Carpenter.Howard started his career in the United States Marine Corps in 1954, serving until 1957 and again from October 1961 to September 1962 as a sergeant E-5. He acted as a radio operator until his honorable discharge. One highlight of his career was climbing Mount Fuji when he served in Japan, a memory he often recalled fondly.After his military career, he continued serving the public, first as a well-respected corrections officer, and then as a game warden for the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection. He worked as a game warden until his retirement. Throughout his 20-year long career, he made numerous lasting contributions in the field of ecological preservation: including helping to repopulate the endangered wood duck population.After retirement, Howard and his beloved wife of 59 years, Pauline, moved to Nova Scotia. He spent his time gardening, birdwatching, making wildlife themed wood carvings and traveling with Pauline. He will be remembered as a protector of nature and the environment, as well as for his sense of humor, honesty, and kindness.Howard is survived by his wife, Pauline, daughter, Paulette (David) Cooper, grandchildren, James L. Cooper, Alicia L. Aldridge, Christina L. Johnson, and Caitlin Cooper, great grandchildren, Abrielle Cooper, Zakai Cooper, Rockwell Cooper and Akeeva Cooper, and his nephew, Scott Wagner. Howard is predeceased by his parents, Howard Burton and Martha (Wolter) Carpenter and his sister, Beverly Wagner.To honor Howard Carpenter's military services, a graveside service will be held at IOOF Memorial Cemetery in Crescent City, CA at 2 PM, November 30, 2024, followed by a reception at the Elk Lodge #1689, 359 H St., Crescent City, CA.
