Noreen Erlyn Matt, age 61, a lifelong resident of Northern California, passed away January 3rd in Crescent City.
A kind, warmhearted individual, Noreen was a creative person whose lifelong passions included sewing, the outdoors and raising several beautiful dogs, all boxers. Noreen was unassuming and will always be remembered fondly for her contagious laughter and gracious spirit. She now is finally with her soul mate and best friend, her late husband, Phillip Matt, for whom she deeply longed for since his passing in 2003.
Noreen was born in Arcata on February 15, 1950, attending Arcata area schools and graduating from Arcata High School in 1968. She also attended College of the Redwoods.
Her love and expertise with sewing led her to her first job, as a seamstress in alterations at Dalys department store in Eureka. In 1973, Noreen went to work for Safeway Stores in Crescent City, where she made many lifelong friends. Noreen retired from Safeway after 38 years of service. She also served her community by sitting two terms with the Del Norte County Grand Jury.
On Valentines Day in 1971, Noreen married Phil, the love of her life. They made their first home in Eureka and later moved to Gasquet before planning and building their dream home in Crescent City. Phil and Noreen spent countless hours camping and enjoying RV travels with wonderful friends.
Noreen began her marriage with Phil wearing the wedding dress she designed and sewed. She continued creating many beautiful things all her life, producing award winning quilts, creating dolls, toll painting and mastering every conceivable craft. She was an artist in the truest sense.
In addition to her late husband Phil, Noreen is preceded in death by her father Hugh McLearn, mother Erlyn Jepsen-McLearn, and sister Lonetta Sayers. She is survived by her brother Lee McLearn.
Her memory lives on through her loving family, the McLearns, the Jepsen and Phils family. Noreen had many close friends and their families, all of whom she cherished deeply. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Memorial services will be conducted by Wiers Mortuary Chapel, 408 G Street, Crescent City and will be held Thursday, January 12th, 2012 at 1:00 PM. Private interment will be held at a later date.
