It is with great
love and abiding respect that we announce the passing of Gail Marie Murphy, who
departed this world on March 13, 2026 in Crescent City, California, at the age
of 84.
Born on April 1,
1941 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles, California, Gail was the beloved
daughter of Dorothy and Sigurd E. Murphy, and a proud daughter of a prominent
and prosperous Irish family deeply woven into the fabric of Los Angeles
society. From her very first day, newspapers took note, her arrival was
celebrated in the Los Angeles social pages, where she was already being
heralded as a future debutante.
She arrived into the
world celebrated, and she leaves it remembered. Gail was raised in an affluent
and socially prominent Los Angeles family, educated at the distinguished
Marlborough School for Girls, and later attended the University of Arizona and Marymount
College, where she proudly pledged Delta Gamma, her mother’s own sorority. She was
presented as a debutante at the Social Service Auxiliary Presentation Ball, a
young woman already fully arrived in the world she was born to grace. She was a
devoted member of the Westminster Women’s Club, where she served with distinction
as hostess of the literary section, a role she embraced with characteristic
elegance, sharp intellect, and an exacting eye for detail.
A lifelong and devoted reader, Gail approached
literature as one approaches a dear and trusted friend. She entertained
beautifully, cooked with artistry, and held the highest standards for
everything she did. She reserved her deepest affections for the animals she
adored, and moved through the world as only Gail Murphy could, with an air that
was impossible to overlook and impossible to forget. She lived her life
with quiet dignity and an unshakeable sense of self.
She is survived by
her partner Jerry Johns; her children Chris C. Cleveland, Robert S. Cleveland, and
Jessica A. Cunningham (née Cleveland); her grandchildren Robert L. Cleveland, Erin
C. Deal (née Cleveland), Tianna L.M. Pepper (née Hoover), Brittany Cleveland,
and Christopher Cleveland; and her great grandchildren Max Cleveland, Atlas
Cleveland, Ben Cleveland, Cillian Deal, Ciaran Deal, and Luke Pepper; and her
brother Sigurd E. Murphy Jr.
She was preceded in
death by her beloved parents Dorothy and Sigurd E. Murphy; her grandparents Mr.
and Mrs. Percy Davis, all of whom rest eternally at Forest Lawn Memorial Park
in Glendale, California; and by Ben Cleveland, father of her children.
No services are
planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who knew
Gail to curl up with a good book in her memory. Rest now, Gail. You are known.
You are remembered. You are loved.
