Obituary

George Thomas "Tom" Hopper of Crescent City, California, passed away on May 7th, 2024. 

Tom was born May 22, 1938, in Oakland, California to William "Bill" Hopper and Dorothy Comar. Tom is survived by his wife Laraine, children Elizabeth "Liz" Hopper, Terri Hopper, Mike Hopper and Sherri Hopper. Grandchildren Paul Galvan, Theresa Galvan, Tyler Hopper, Courtni Hopper, Neil Hopper and Chad Rockwell. Great grandchildren Thomas Galvan, Liz-e Galvan, and Desmond Hopper. He is also survived by his brother John Hopper.

Prior to moving to Crescent City, California, Tom served in the Navy for four years. In 1963, Tom and Laraine headed north from Oakland, California to Crescent City, California where Tom started working for the Del Norte Sheriff's office as a deputy. Tom was later promoted to Chief Jailor in 1966 then Undersheriff in 1967. In 1977 he was elected Sheriff and served the community in that capacity till he retired in 1987.

After his retirement Tom went on to become the Public Information Officer for Pelican Bay Prison. Tom was very instrumental in bringing Pelican Bay Prison to Crescent City.

For a brief stint Tom dabbled in his own business of "private investigator."

Tom was actively involved in Masons, Shriners, Elks and Rotary. Tom held Masonic Honors in the form of Hiram Award, Anniversary Level Donor, Anniversary Award - 50 years. Tom was an Inspector, Worshipful Master, Senior Warden and Junior Warden.
During his time with the Elks, Tom served in all seven office positions in the local 1689. Tom did an excellent job in running the house / bar. After successfully achieving everything local he went on to serve as the Vice President for the Great Northwest district. In addition, Tom served as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler for the Great Northwest district. Tom held numerous other positions within the Great Northwest District.

Tom and Laraine enjoyed taking their family camping at Panther Flat, Rogue River, and Loeb Park. The family enjoyed many cruises to Hawaii and Alaska.

Service for George Thomas “Tom” Hopper will be Saturday, July 13th, 2024, at 1:15 PM at the Masonic Lodge located at 250 9th St. Crescent City, California 95531

Military Honors followed by a Masonic Service. Eulogies remembering Tom will be held after the Masonic service.
